Silver city started as a “rip-roarin” town during the 1870 spring. This was when a silver Bonanza was discovered in the western side of the current courthouse. Over 80 buildings were constructed in less than a year after this discovery.  Silver city became a city of the Grant County seat after this discovery in 1871. Southwest of Mexico was plagued in those early years of development by Apache raids. These fierce warriors were led into the area by their famous chiefs such as Cochise, Chato, Nana, Geronimo and many others. The Apaches felt secure from the US army invasions due to the rough terrains of the silver city. It also provided strategic lookout positions due to the impenetrable Gila wilderness which became a perfect stronghold for the Apache
